BP bows to environmental pressure not to increase pollution discharge - Hemscott, UK
Excerpt:
"BP PLC said said it will not increase the amount of pollution it dumps into Lake Michigan after weeks of criticism by environmentalists and politicians, even though this may scupper expansion plans.
Despite receiving state approval to increase the amount of ammonia and suspended solids it dumps into the Great Lakes in line with plans to expand its oil refinery in Whiting, east of Chicago, the company said it will not make use of the increased discharge limits.
However the 3.8 bln usd expansion, which is designed to increase the amount of Canadian heavy crude processed at the more than 400,000 barrel-per-day refinery from 30 to 90 pct, could be cancelled if the company finds that the self-imposed restrictions impact on the viability of the project."
